A little while back, Andy, a good mate of mine was kind enough to drop some new beats into my DropBox – which I always appreciate :) – and after a positive response to some dope Gaslamp Killer tunes, he thought I might appreciate the very cool sounds of Flying Lotus (a.k.a FlyLo, a.k.a Steven Ellison).
Needless to say, I was very impressed with the very hazy and laxed lo-fi sounds of this emerging Californian based hip-hop producer. So much so, I’ve been listening to his stuff flat out! His kick-ass sounds have left me chomping at the bit for more and have led to the discovery of a myriad of other similar artists and related blogs – ultimately, opening up a whole other world of interweb/musical goodness.
Whilst on my quest to find out as much as I could about Steven Ellison, I found this neat video interview on XLR8R TV where the “Instrumental beat-poet Flying Lotus pays tribute to vintage video games and cartoon culture”:
As an introduction to his style, I suggest you check out July Heat or his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix… either of these are a great intro into to his coolness.
